Beekeeping / wildlife garden / encouraging wildlife
Anyone else got a hive or thinking about it?
We already have a small pond we put in and a wild flower, vegetable & fruit garden with birdfeeders we created out of what was patio and shingles.

We built a hive this weekend along with 20k bees arriving. My wife did a course and went for it. She opened the nuc box (smaller temp transportable hive) last night to transfer them to their permanent home, never seen anything like it tens of thousands of bees, I had the smoker to keep them calm (she has the protective suit) but I had to go in and watch behind an ajar kitchen door as there were literally hundreds of agitated bees buzzing around me with more taking flight as she opened the lid and transferred the frames full of bees and honey to the bigger permanent hive.
We have a small garden so not sure it was the best idea as when the sun is out there are a fair amount buzzing around the hive and the neighbours gardens. She did let them know obviously, god knows what they think
I did voice my concerns, clearly not enough but am strangely fascinated and concerned about their welfare already and have done a crash course last few days using Google and her Beekeeper manual driven by the need to know and genuine curiosity.

Wildlife is vital but in decline, we wouldn't survive very long without bees & wildlife, bees are right up there among THE most important species.

Ag FC.

It sounds ridiculous I agree Gavros, can't believe it myself, let's hope I can master it too before they kill me.

It's actually pretty easy once you know the basics which are pure common sense, just need to not be scared and stay calm around then.

Good luck with that 13BR, sounds like a challenge. We have a decent size garden, and as the kids get older and no longer have a football goal or trampoline set up, I’m starting to get interested in how to ‘rewild’ it a bit. Planted a russet apple tree a few months ago and bought a meadow-type wild grass/wild flower seed mix to have a go. Not seen much sign of a meadow yet, think the pigeons got s lot of the seeds. I’m also very new to gardening, so it may take a few goes.

Maybe some Acid Jazz will calm them down?

Ag ag Gavros.

When we scattered our wild flower seeds it took a year for them to grow Occupy, you may see them next spring. My wife is the keen gardener, she's got me more into it. I do like the idea of encouraging wildlifes so many don't now because if patios, decking, ll driveways and the need to park cars in what were once front gardens. You just need to Google which plants encourage it to come, build it and they will come

Wanstead, my Mum hates bees so has already said she won't be sitting in our garden

Cheers Exile.
Good question Ironskej?
I presume honey bees, apparently native ones, will check with the wife if they are a certain kind and keep WHO updated
I have learnt that like an ant colony they have different jobs. Some are foragers who fly up to 3 miles to collect nectar and water for the hive. The makes are only there to mate with the queen.and are redundant once they have. Others only role is to feed the queen or look after the honey, there are always 4 or 5 around the entrance on guard against hive robbers like wasps, mice & rats.

You need to get a Camera set up - I’d love to see a rat try his luck

Sounds a bit like the two bob, lying shysters set up:

Money (grabbing) B’s.
One thinks she’s the queen bee and the others just go about, feed her up and look after the money.
Not forgetting the robbing Rats bit.

Re: Beekeeping / wildlife garden / encouraging wildlife
Apparently the males are the Bumble bees and don't sting. The foragers don't forage on their own doorstep as it attracts wasps and other bees & will fly up to 3 miles to garage for nectar.
Didn't realise that you have to feed them too with syrupy sugar when they haven't built up enough honey supplies so we were up late worrying & making a temporary feeder out of a jar with pieced holes in the lid.

Yeh not sure how a rat could get in as the entrance is only big enough for bees, maybe they just try to? A camera would be a interetsing, it's mesmerising watching them come bacj

...... it's mesmerising watching them come back and forth, like a really busy airport, as some come back others fly out. Been sitting there just watching.
